In Communities
Community-based learning centers are located within public housing developments owned and managed by the Raleigh Housing Authority to provide out-of-school support to K-12 student-residents and their families. The primary focus is academic tutorial and homework completion guided by certified educators and community volunteers. The centers also offer mentoring and enrichment programs through community partners and volunteers. Because the centers are located within the home communities of the students and parents/families, the whole family receives dependable, routine access to much-needed resources to promote student success and wellbeing in the classroom and in life.
Learning centers operate year-round with after-school and summer programs. Approximately 200 students participate in learning center programs each year. Our signature academic program in the learning centers is the SMART After-School/Summer Camp. “SMART” is an acronym for Students Maximizing Academic Resources through Technology.  Student engagement is focused around project-based, STEM learning; small group instruction and tutorial led by certified educators; and interactive instruction leveraging online academic tools.
The overall goal of CIS Wake’s efforts in community learning centers is to prepare students to be successful and productive citizens, achieving personal goals and making positive contributions to their communities.
