Upon his first introduction, Jamal asks his students if they’ve ever heard of a Gadfly, then introduces himself as one. His promise to his students is that he will provoke them into action! Jamal works to challenge students past the mentality of accepting the status quo.
Jamal brings over 25 years of passion and experience as a youth advocate to the Communities In Schools of Wake County (CIS Wake) team. He has focused on youth development, delinquency prevention, and racial disparity reduction efforts throughout his career, in previous roles as the Director of Youth Thrive, and the Youth and Family Services Administrator for the Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
Jamal also managed scholarships for the Secretary’s Youth Leadership Academy and Youth Development Center, where he helped youth find resources needed to attend NC Community Colleges. His extensive experiences in working with youth marry well with the vision of CIS Wake, and his ability to work with community leaders, youth service professionals, volunteers, school personnel and faith-based organizations helps him to provide an environment where students thrive and succeed in school and in life. Jamal is married to Venecia and has two daughters, Maliah and Imani.
