Summer Enrichment Camp Is a Big Success!

08/03/2006

School might have been “out” but at Communities In Schools of Wake County our Summer Enrichment Camp was “IN”!

CISWC provided summer tutorial programming to 125 students at 5 Raleigh Housing Authority communities. While focusing on the traditional goals of helping students maintain their reading comprehension levels and math skills, this year’s camp also provide valuable lessons on life skills and philanthropy.

Through a partnership with the Wake Education Partnership, CISWC provided students with a life skills curriculum that helped the students learn more about anger management, peer pressure, and other skills that will help them succeed in both school and life.

In addition, CISWC’s Executive Director provided students with the “Giving and Growing Program” that introduced students to the world of philanthropy. Students researched area nonprofits, learned about group dynamics, and then divided into two teams to make a presentation on why “their” nonprofit should receive a $500 donation in their honor. When the 10 judges deadlocked in tie (and they really did!), the gift, a donation by a local CISWC supporter, was eventually made to both charities – the Red Cross and the United Negro College Fund.

CISWC would like to thank the numerous volunteers and youth from the City of Raleigh’s Summer Youth Employment program that helped make this summer such a success for our students. Another special thanks to donors who understand the value of CISWC’s year-round programming to ensure students return to school ready to learn and succeed in their studies!
